The Most Expensive Pokémon Card Sales of All Time

Quick answer: the most expensive Pokémon card ever sold is the PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator. Logan Paul sold it through Goldin on February 16, 2026 for $16,492,000 including the buyer's premium, which is also the highest price ever paid for any trading card at auction.

Below it sits a small club of contest prizes, tournament trophies, Gold Star cards and graded 1st Edition Charizards. The figures here are public sales reported through October 2026, with buyer's premium included where the auction house publishes it. Records change quickly, so think of this as a snapshot.

How a contest prize became a $16 million card

The Pikachu Illustrator was never in a booster pack. In 1998 the Japanese magazine CoroCoro Comic ran an illustration contest and handed out 39 of these cards as prizes. The artwork is by Atsuko Nishida, Pikachu's original designer, and the card carries the word "Illustrator" where other cards print "Trainer". Logan Paul paid $5,275,000 for the only PSA 10 copy in 2021, a Guinness World Record at the time, and set another record when he sold it in 2026. The full story is in Logan Paul's Pikachu Illustrator.

Why these cards cost so much

Every card on the list combines several of the same ingredients. Prize cards like the Illustrator, the Trophy Pikachus and the Art Academy promos exist in dozens or a few hundred copies at most. A perfect grade multiplies value: a PSA 10 of a famous card can be worth several times the PSA 9, and the population report (how many copies sit at each grade) does a lot of the pricing. Charizard and Pikachu, the two most collected Pokémon, carry a premium almost everywhere they appear. And the 1999 1st Edition Base Set is the set most grown-up collectors opened as children, which keeps demand strong.

Chase cards that do not cost millions

You can own a true chase card on a normal budget. Special Illustration Rares and gold Hyper Rares from 151, Prismatic Evolutions and Evolving Skies regularly trade from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. See live prices on our Charizard, Pikachu, Umbreon and PSA 10 pages.

The best-known is the 1st Edition Base Set Charizard: a PSA 10 sold for $550,000 at Heritage Auctions in December 2025, with higher sales reported during 2026. Prize and error Charizards such as the 1995 Topsun Charizard have also reached hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Almost entirely a question of grade: thousands of dollars in low grades, tens to hundreds of thousands in PSA 9, and over half a million in PSA 10. Check recent sales at the exact grade.

Can a modern card be worth a lot?

Yes. Popular Special Illustration Rares and alternate arts can top $1,000 raw and far more in PSA 10, especially Charizard, Pikachu and Umbreon. Our value guide shows how to check any card.
